“This is what learning is. You suddenly understand something you’ve understood all your life, but in a new way.”

Doris Lessing

The Permaculture Design Forum

is a series of structured sessions for diploma apprentices and permaculture designers to share their designs and receive feedback. It lasts an hour and is followed by time to check-in.

The number of session depends on the group size (1 session per person). At each session there is also a short learning share of 2 minutes looking at anything inspiring for designing. We’ve been introduced to new tools, frameworks and design solutions. The bulk of the time is devoted to looking at a design a member brings and going round each person for focussed feedback.

‘Thank you very much Carla for organising these group sessions, every session was an inspiration and food for creativity, skill sharing and in such excellent company. It was truly a memorable experience and it has propelled me forward into my next designs.’

‘I truly felt touched and honoured to be able to share and learn in this cohort, skilfully facilitated and content rich stacking functions, multiplying yields and turning challenges into solutions all the way.’

‘The Design Forum offers a wonderful way to present your designs and receive feedback from a healthy mix of perspectives (there is no obligation to do so). Experiencing the design process of other students was a rare privilege. I found it an invaluable source of ideas, links, references and inspiration.’

‘The format is inclusive and relaxed, it is structured but retains a lovely sense of informality.’

Diploma in Applied Permaculture

This is a self study program that can be completed in two+ years (min 2 years after completing a Permaculture Design Certificate PDC). You must have a PDC from a registered educator to sign up to the course.

Because it is a self study program you choose what you want to study and design. You are expected to try a broad range of design frameworks and tools, along with the application of the ethics and principles.

What you have to do:

  • 10 designs
    • At least one of which must be a land based design and one must be a people based design
    • At least 6 must be implemented.
    • Each design should be able to be read within 20-30 minutes (so we’re thinking smallish, not a enormous!).
  • Some reflections on your overall learning
  • An up to date CV or your key areas of learning

What you will get if you complete the course:

  • a generative and ethical way of approaching and designing life
  • tools to support ethical and generative decisions
  • inspiration through access to other permaculture practioners
  • a qualification that will give you the knowledge base to teach on a PDC (additional teaching experience is also required for this)
  • confidence to sell your skills as a permaculture designer
  • opportunity to be added to the Permaculture Associations list of consultants of permaculture designers

I am a senior tutor and can support you through your journey but you have to register with the Permaculture Association who run the course and charge £12 a month to do it.

If you’re already doing the diploma, I offer a few resources to help you on your way. These are aimed at active permaculture designers too, so if you’re not doing the diploma, you would be welcome to sign up for them too (sign up at the bottom of this page).

  • Regular emails with tools, frameworks and other tips and ideas for designing
  • The design forum (see below)
  • Regular or one off design support tutorials

When you sign up you’re required to choose a tutor with whom you will work through the process. if you wanted to work with me, I bring a coaching method to the support I give.

I have already seen some of my apprentices graduate with flying colours, please get in touch if you’d like to find out more.
